Housing Queue

What does it mean?

A housing queue is a system where apartment seekers register and accumulate queue time to gain access to rental apartments. In Sweden, the most well-known example is Stockholm's Housing Agency (Bostadsförmedlingen), where the average wait time for a city center apartment can exceed 10 years. The system is designed to create fair allocation, but the long wait times mean many people search through other channels in parallel.

Besides Stockholm's Housing Agency, many municipalities have their own housing queues, and private property companies also offer their own queue systems. There is typically an annual fee to remain in the queue — in Stockholm it is 200 SEK per year. The earlier you register, the better your position, which is why many parents register their children as soon as they turn 18.

Key Points

  • Average queue time in central Stockholm is often over 10 years
  • Registration usually costs an annual fee (200 SEK/year in Stockholm)
  • Many municipalities and private property companies have separate queues
  • You can be registered in multiple queues simultaneously to increase your chances
  • Queue time starts from the registration date — register early

Practical Tip

Register in the housing queue today, even if you are not planning to move soon. Queue time counts from the day you register and every year you wait significantly improves your chances. Sign up for both municipal and private queues.
